HWUCU is the Heriot Watt University branch of University and College Union, the largest trade union and professional association for academics, lecturers, trainers, researchers and academic-related staff working in further and higher education throughout the UK. At Heriot Watt our members include academic, contract, research, administrative, library and computer staff. We are a vibrant active democratic community, committed to improving the lives of our members, with a strong branch committee of elected officers and a local branch office located in Scott Russell Building 2.05 (Building 11 on the campus map).

Locally we represent members of staff at Grade 6 and above (a good rule of thumb is we represent staff who are eligible to be members of  the USS pension scheme), plus PhD students and Post Docs, who can join for free. This is also known as our bargaining group. We represent all 3 Scottish campuses but not Dubai or Malaysia.

Our local negotiators provide an unparalleled voice of staff to management, ensuring that the staff perspective is incorporated into everything the University does. HWUCU negotiates working conditions on behalf of all academic and academic-related staff through the Combined Joint Negotiating and Consultation Committee (CJNCC).

Our trained caseworkers are available to represent local members should you have a problem at work. Last year our branch dealt with requests for advice or representation involving issues such as redundancy, stress, workload and salary.

Welcome to Heriot-Watt UCU’s blog. We hope it will help you to keep in touch with the local and national activities of UCU.

Get involved and help make us even more effective!
